How unit conversion works
Every unit in a category is stored as a factor relative to one base unit (metre for length, kilogram for mass, square metre for area, litre for volume, metre per second for speed, second for time, byte for data, pascal for pressure and joule for energy). To convert, the value is first turned into the base unit and then into the target:
result = value × factor(from) ÷ factor(to)
Temperature is different because the scales have different zero points, so it uses formulas instead of a single factor: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 and K = °C + 273.15.
KB vs KiB — which is right?
Both. SI units (kB, MB, GB) use powers of 1000, which is what drive manufacturers and network speeds use. Binary IEC units (KiB, MiB, GiB) use powers of 1024, which is what most operating systems report. That is why a "1 TB" disk shows up as about 931 GiB.
Are the results exact?
Factors use the official international definitions (e.g. 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly).
